Difference between counseling and psychotherapy



Counselling is not psychotherapy although it is used by psychotherapist as one of the techniques of treatment. The following are some of the points of difference between the counseling and psychotherapy.  

Psychotherapy
Counselling
Operates in a medical setting
Operates in an education setting
Special types of tools and techniques are employed
Uses those tools and techniques that can be used in schools
Deals with individuals having acute problems
Concerned mostly with individuals having normal
Considers psychology as the only basis for studying individuals
Does not consider psychology as the only basis for studying the individuals
Does not recognize the importance of social-economic factor for solving the problem
Socio-economic factors are given an important place
Touches a few problems but goes very deep in studying those problems
Touches with problems of the individuals but does not go deeper
Involves one to one relationship
Involves one to one or one to group relationships
Treats each individual as unique personality and helped accordingly
Teachers usually employ group relationships
The counselor may not know the subject matter of various subjects
The teacher knows the subject matter
Collects information about occupations, training institution, college, apprenticeship programmes 
Collects information about instructional activities
Makes use of various tools to understand the psychological make-up of the students.
Usually depends upon teaching method
Primarily concerned with the problems of social and emotional adjustment
Mainly concerned with the academic attainments and adjustments of the students.
