Difference between counseling and guidance
Counselling is a part of guidance, not all of it. It is a specialized or individualized part which deals with the individual at problems points. Thus, all counseling is guidance but all guidance is not counseling. The following are some of the points of difference between the counseling and guidance.
1. Guidance and counseling are not synonymous terms
2. Counselling is a part of guidance, not all of it.
3. The concepts of counseling as a group of service, which make up the guidance programe is generally accepted.
4. Counseling is a psychological field that deals with research and applied work to provide training and supervision, while Guidance is a psychological field that deals with assisting clients in their need to choose the right course of action.
5. Guidance is the total programe or all the activities and services engaged in by an educational institution that are aimed at assisting an individual to make and carryout adequate plans and to achieve satisfactory adjustment in all assisting an individual to make and carryout adequate plans and to achieve satisfactory adjustment in all aspects of his/her daily life.
6. Guidance will be done by teachers; it is an important component in all educational programes. It uses counseling as one of the services.
7. In counseling two phase are available:
-The adjustive phase- the empasis is on social, personal and emotional problems of an individual. The adjustive Phase can be considered as Counseling.
- The distributive phase- the focus is upon educational, vocational and occupational problems, Distributive phase can be aptly described as guidance.
