What is Guidance

Guidance should not be equated with providing directives to an individual. It does not mean thrusting of somebody’s vies on others or someone taking decisions for others. It is crucial that individuals take their own decisions. The United States Office of Education 1918 defines guidance as the process of acquainting the individual with the various ways, including special training, in which he may discover his natural endowments so that he makes a living to his own best advantage and that of the society. Crow and Crow 1962, maintain that “guidance is an assistance providing directives to an individual of any age to help him direct his life, develop his own point of view, make his own decisions and carry his own burdens. According to J. Jones 1934, guidance means to indicate, to point out, and show the way. Traxler 1966, describes the main objective of guidance to assist each youngster in such a way that he can recognize his capacity and strengths and after building on them can integrate them into his life values and aims and to ultimately enable him to steer his own path.
